Common Questions

Membership FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most often about joining, approval, and access.

Why do I have to join Meetup first?

Meetup is the official entry point into BuildMetroATL. It allows us to verify that prospective members are real people with genuine interest in community infrastructure. It also gives you immediate access to our public events calendar while your membership is being reviewed.

What are the membership questions?

After joining Meetup, you will complete a short set of questions about your interests, skills, background, and how you would like to contribute. These are not test questions. They help us understand who is joining and how to connect you with the right people, zones, and pillar work.

How long does approval take?

Most applications are reviewed within a few days. We read every response personally to ensure that new members understand the mission, values, and expectations of BuildMetroATL. If you have not heard back within one week, reach out through Meetup.

Why is Discord private?

Discord is our internal community workspace, not a public chat room. Access is only provided after joining Meetup, completing the membership questions, and receiving approval. This protects the quality of conversation, maintains trust, and ensures that everyone in the workspace is committed to the same mission.

Can I attend events without joining?

Most BuildMetroATL events are listed on Meetup and are open to the public. However, members who have completed the full onboarding pathway receive priority access, internal event notifications, and the ability to help plan and lead gatherings.

What if I don't know my zone yet?

That is completely fine. Many members discover their zone after joining. Once you are in the community, we will help you identify which of the ten BuildMetroATL zones you live or work in, and connect you with members already building there.

Is there a cost to join?

There is no membership fee to join BuildMetroATL. Meetup itself may have platform fees, but BuildMetroATL does not charge for membership, Discord access, or participation in community events.

What happens if I am not approved?

If an application does not meet the current criteria, we will communicate clearly and respectfully. In most cases, applicants are encouraged to attend public events, learn more about the mission, and reapply when they feel aligned with the community expectations.

The pathway begins on Meetup.

Join the community, complete your membership questions, and take the first step toward building where you are.
